Loose trousers for Ivy. These are upcycled from a pair of my old pyjama trousers, and I made the pattern for the trousers myself, based on another pair of Ivy's and using my newly aquired pattern cutting skills (and tool!) from a course. She has to wear long trousers for Farm Adventurers to protect her legs while they are out and about, but her long trousers are either legging, which are tight and uncomfortable, or thick winter trousers. So this was a trial run for making her a whole load of these. The body/crotch is a bit too long, and the legs a bit short, so the pattern needs a bit of adjusting.
Robot top for Kwojo. When I made Ivy's original Robot top late year (or the year before?). She then told me that I needed to make one for Kwojo too. He was really keen, and Ivy kept reminding me (she has a good memory), so I finally did it! The robot is turquoise, as is the stitching around it. The button eyes are two different shades of green, and the heart is stitched in purple.
23. Robot top for Ivy. Because Ivy's grown out of her original robot top, and because I thought it would be cute if their robot tops coordinated! My figuring out the stitches on my machine has improved so much, this one is WAY better than the original! Her robot is also turquoise with turquoise stitching, but the eyes are purple and the heart is green.
24. Cork board. This was a project that Ivy and I started together, although she lost interest in it because of the multiple but repetitive stages involved. She chose the colour, and had the big responsibility of helping me paint it using Grown Up Paint (ie. acrylic), which she really enjoyed. When that was dry, we used a whole load of PVA to stick down the corks (which I'd cut in half with our bread knife, so they'd have a flat surface to glue down). We only had a few corks at a time, so it took a while to complete. It is now our tea menu, so we don't have to remember the 20 odd types of tea we have off the top of our head when offering people a drink.
These should have been simple enough but ended up being a bitch. I hand sewed about half because the thickness of material was making my machine very unhappy. I didn't mind the handsewing though as I was watching Dexter at the time.
10. Doily Lion applique top for Ivy. Inspiration from here and here. Mostly handsewing! (and watching Dexter..). I'm really pleased with it!
11. Oversized 'Greetings Coaster' for Kwojo as a late Christmas present. 100% handsewn (more Dexter...), with a some of our words to live by on: Wild and Free, and, Have Fun & Grow. I really like this. And I LOVE hand sewing words.
13. A snowdrop fairy to match our crocus fairy from last year. I like crafts that reflect the seasons, and it's especially nice when that is coming out of Winter and into Spring. Lovely to see the snowdrops and crocuses popping up around the parks and farm, so we bought some for our garden too. All handsewn (but no Dexter).

14. A doll for Leyla's 2nd birthday, in blue as that's her favourite colour. An improvement on Ivy's doll in a few ways, like no puckering of fabric around the neck. I also attempted shaping the head properly (rather than just stuffing it), but when the instructions say that the wool needs to really hard, it turns out they were right. So, the face is a bit flat and big, but it's ok. I quite like how the hair came out, tried to make it curly and wild like Leyla's.
15. Amber and silver pendant for myself. This may look simple enough in design, but I spent five weeks (3 hours per week in class) working on this, and at least five hours of that was spent filing to get the bezel to be the right shape for the stone. So much filing! I was very, very please to finish this. Also, this stone was given to me by my cousin for my 18th birthday, when I was doing a jewellery course the first time around. So, it feels great to have finally made something with it! Definitely for myself. This is actually the back, where I was more lazy about filing to get the right shape to fit the stone, so it's a bit sloppy. The front is much neater, honest!
Batik. I spent ages practising different images and patterns and techniques of wax on fabric. It was a lovely process actually as the hot wax smell filled my house and reminded me of when I learnt batik in Java. Anyway, I used machine dye and stupidly didn't pre-empt the fact that a 40*C wash would melt the wax. So, my pieces just came out blue with only a hint of pattern. No photos of that.
Applique dinosaur top for Ivy (a birthday present). This was ridiculously difficult and I spent more time unpicking stitches than I did sewing. A flower broach for Kwojo's Mum for Christmas. This was a combination on machine and hand sewing, including sewing on tiny beads. I did this while I was ill, and it was really nice to have something to focus on, and it turned out beautifully. I forgot to take a photo of it though :(

Rainbow (sort of) bunting for Kwojo's birthday. Because, you know, our house doesn't have enough bunting already...
A Steiner style doll for Ivy (birthday present)! I used the pattern from this book and the advice of the lovely Kerstin from Playfull Toyshop. I went for a really simple one and was suprised to have finished it the same day I started it! So pleased with it, and even want to make more (!).
December

Two matching Bunny tops, one for Eve for Christmas and the other for Ivy for her birthday. The nice thing about doing two is that the second one is so much quicker, easier and neater!

The feather garland that nearly didn't happen, because even though I'd made that practice feather for Steph way back in October, I couldn't seem to do it again. I spent so much time getting it wrong and wanting to cry, and then I just realised I could make a pattern for it. So I did and then it was straightforward. I was really, really pleased with these, and luckily Emmelie and Jake seem to like them too (Christmas present).
Skeleton tea cosy fo Steph. This is another project that I was really pleased with. I had the idea years ago to do a tea cosy that was like an x-ray of a teapot, but couldn't really figure out how to do it. Then this year I remembered, and found a way, and did it! So, normal teapot on one side, x-ray on the other, and godzilla fabric inside because why the hell not?!
Trying to do these posts monthly again. This year with numbers!

1. Birthday card for my Mum. This may have been the bunting design again? No photo.

2. Dinosaur birthday card for Ivy. Yes, her birthday was not in January, but at least I had it finished by her party (which is more than can be said for last years, which doesn't yet exist...).

3. Dinosaur reversible circle skirt for Ivy. I love the colliding of gender stereotypes in a single garment, skirts are so girly, dinosaurs are put in the 'boys things' pile. My girl loves dinosaurs.

4. January 2011 in our family photo album. Yes I am exactly three years behind now. This is my favourite page, the writing says "These pages sum up the early days well; sleeping, breastfeeding, nappy changes and gazing at our sweet baby!"

7. Applique dinosaur top for one of Ivy's friends, who also likes dinosaurs. I actually made this one in time for his birthday, by the way.

8. Felted leggings for Ivy. A project started at our Steiner playgroup (in November maybe?) and finally finished. Made by sewing together the arms of an old wool jumper that had been hot washed to felt it. They are really cosy and she actually likes wearing them, which surprised me a little.

I didn't even do something creative every day because we spent so much time just being outside and enjoying the amazing weather, and Ivy stopped napping because there was just too much fun to be had (maybe mostly my doing), so by the time she was in bed I was exhausted (in a very happy way) too.

July

I painted a bunting wedding card for my cousin and his wife. No photos. As usual too last minute to remember to take a photo!

A waterproof bike seat cover for Kwojo. I just made this up and tried to figure it out myself. Turned out the plastic fabric I used (which was the big plastic floor covering from Ivy's messy Baby Led Weaning days) was too stiff and thick and didn't really bend properly, so I had to add in a shoe lace to tie it down as the elastic wasn't enough. The result was rather like a shower cap and I claimed it for my own as it was too embarrassing to expect Kwojo to be seen in public with. He was very polite and even quite complimentary about it though.

I made a Greetings Coaster for my brother for his graduation. It said "Con-GRAD-ulations". I know. No photos.

August

This was an accidental project. I was going to make pyjama shorts for myself and picked out a fabric from my stash which was red with big black polka dots. Ivy saw it on my sewing table and said "I need to wear my ladybird dress!". She doesn't have and never has had a ladybird dress but clearly the fabric was so inspiring that it led her to believe that she did in fact have one. It was funny. So I thought I'd make her something with any leftover from my shorts. Well, the shorts were another one of those "I can figure this out without a pattern" ideas, which ended up with me incredibly confused and cutting all of the wrong pieces out. By the time I realised the error of my ways there was not enough fabric left to make myself shorts, so I made Ivy some instead. Again, not following a pattern, just based on an existing pair of shorts. I even did different front and back pieces! It's a satin-y fabric which is why it looks shiny.

Fabric bags for my cousin's daughter's 2nd birthday's. Another "I can figure it out myself" projects, except I did and it worked out well. Phew! The only bit I didn't do were the handles because when I was shopping for handles my Mum suggested I should just make some from the same fabric as the bags. I said that would be tricky. She said it would be easy. So I said ok you do it. She did, and wouldn't you know it turned out to be tricky! The bags are fully lined and have pockets too. When Ivy saw them she gasped and exclaimed "You made little pockets!" and I thought "Yes I am awesome". (They are actually the same shape and size, photo was taken on an angle)

And bunting for a Welcome to the World present for another cousin's brand new baby.

September

Pyjama shorts for me. Attempt number two, using an alternative fabric. I completed them, but wouldn't exactly say they were a success. Think clown pants. Yeah, no photos. A moment of "definitely using a pattern next time". Will I ever learn? Probably not. I probably just like making my brain hurt.

A broach branch, to go with my necklace branch!

Doll bedding for Ivy as I'd decided to make her a doll for her birthday since she started showing an interest in them. My friend gave us a doll's Moses basket a while ago which was hers when she was little, and I'd stashed it away until Ivy was interested in dolls. I wish I'd taken 'before' photos because it was ugly. Garish pink, 80's nightmarish pattern, lots of frills. So I dyed the sheet blue and sewed together a patchwork of scraps from Ivy's own quilt to cover the blanket and pillow.

And a fabric feather, instead of a birthday card for Steph. It didn't even have a greeting on, I had to say that myself. And I forgot to take a photo.

April

I had an amazing first week of April crafting-wise as I finished TWO projects!

A warm woolly purple dress for Ivy. I'd originally bought this fabric in Autumn, planning to make the dress as a birthday present, but got to the point in the pattern where I had to make bias binding and got overwhelmed and put it in a box for a few months. Forced myself to finish it and it was a lot easier and quicker than I thought! Felt quite empowered by the process!

And something for me. Crocheted slippers. We started making these in our Steiner playgroup, but I didn't get very far with it during the sessions as Ivy would cling to me like a koala bear, so I had to finish them at home which meant figuring out how to do it myself. Lots of undoing and redoing and finally got two slippers that look alike enough and fit my feet! No photos though.

This was Kwojo's idea as we have a large tea collection and some of the boxes are so pretty it seems a shame to recycle them. A tea collage which now hangs in the kitchen entrance. It was nice to do something together, although I learnt that Kwojo is even more indecisive than me!

I finally started our family photo album. Well, it's a continuation really as I put the album together for Kwojo's birthday when I was pregnant. This was quite a lovely process to go through as I went back and read through all of my journal entries from my whole pregnancy so that I could have something to say about each week. Very glad to have kept that record, and glad to have remembered to take a photo each week too!

May

This was for a community art exhibition called 88 Cakes which was held at Bubbahub as part of the Southbank Arts Trail. The challenge was to make a cake on the theme of motherhood, and I nearly didn't do it because I'm just not that into baking. So I didn't bake, and I sewed instead. And the result was what I like to call Conceptual Coasters. Inspired by the milestone that had recently been reached of having to share my cake with Ivy and no longer being able to distract her with her own healthy snacks, followed by the dilemma of do I want to eat cake more than I don't want her to eat cake? Do I give up cake or let her eat cake? Our compromise was carrot cake. Hopefully it is also obvious that these coasters are about more than just sharing cake. I did a lot of hand sewing for this which was really relaxing (surprisingly) and also make it feel like quite the labour of love. It was a wonderful feeling to be part of a collective art exhibition, scary to have something I'd created 'out there', and really reassuring to hear the positive feedback I got! AND, they sold. SOMEONE BOUGHT SOMETHING I MADE.

My necklace branch. A stick found in the park, several small nails hammered into it and a few big ones to attch it to the wall. A quick, simple and very satisfying project. I love having my necklaces hanging up, they don't get tangled or forgotten about, and they I get to see their prettiness all the time!

My Mum bought a bear in a charity shop for Ivy to have at their house, but she didn't think much of the scarf it came with so she asked me to crochet one in the same colours as Ivy's scarf.

June

Our good friends got married, so I made them bunting.
I also helped make a sash for her wedding dress, but I don't have any pictures of it (it was a bit of a last minute figure it out as we go along panic project).

For the wedding party, Ivy insisted she needed a crown, so I quickly sewed this from felt and leftover bunting tape. She wore it for about five minutes and then never again.
Another coaster. I call this a Greetings Coaster. This followed a conversation about how it's strange that birthday cards are such a big deal in this country, and often more important than a present in a way, even though they don't do much and cost quite a bit. So, this is a coaster, which also has a greeting on. Pretty, and useful.
These spring onions went straight into a potato salad, after Ivy had tasted them, pulled a face, and told me that they are "bicey" (spicy). Chives from the garden also went into the salad, which Ivy picked herself.

Growing our own started off as being functional, why buy something you can produce yourself, for free? Last year was a huge learning curve, including learning that it's not actually free! There's potentially a lot of stuff to buy: seeds, compost, pots, saucers, canes, cane toppers, tomato feed. Then you can't just sew seeds and let them get on with it, you have to actually do stuff to them. Which is where I fell short last year and despite planting all of my tomato seeds and ending up with about 80 seedling, I only got three tomatoes from three tomato plants. And then there are all the potential pests. Lots of lessons learnt.

This year it hasn't felt like a chore or work, and I actually seem to "get it". It's hard to explain what it is that is so satisfying, and it's a bit of a cliche to say that it's about feeling close to nature. But to observe the process from seed to plant to food is incredibly grounding, and has deepened my respect for life.

Ivy is enjoying it too. I was surprised recently when someone asked her what was growing and she correctly named the tomato plants and lavender. She got stuck naming the others, but could point them out when I asked where the spring onions and carrots were. I like that she knows what things look like before they are ready to eat. We recently spotted the little orange tops of carrots sticking out from the soil, even I found it exciting (and reassuring!) that there really are carrots growing under there. Ivy will often point our plants out to visitors "Lookat our PLANTS!", which is pretty much what I want to say too.

And as for all that stuff you need to buy, I have found ways around some of those. Plant pots borrowed from my Dad, or improvised out of containers that would otherwise be recycled. My workplace collects large tins for me, and I use a nail and hammer to punch holes in the bottom for drainage. The little tins are a good size for herbs or seedlings, and plastic containers like those that hummus comes in work well as saucers for small pots and tins.

As well as all of the lessons I have learnt about gardening, I've also learnt something pretty usefull about myself; that I can figure stuff out myself.
An important milestone as it makes packing lunch easier, and I no longer look like a mean mother who gives her child plain bread for lunch.

So I ordered one of these:

And one of these:

Quite excited to wrap up a cheese sandwich for her and an avocado-tomato sandwich for me in these. I probably shouldn't be as excited as I am, but yay picnic accessories! In pretty colours! Recycled from plastic bottles!

You can get a discount if you use the code "eco1". Possibly 15%. It was £1.63 off £12.99, which was odd as they cost £6.50 each.
The things I dislike:

- Scaffolding at the end of the garden which has been there since before we moved in. Other people kept commenting on it being still there, and are they even working on that house, etc, and it didn't really bother me until they started taking the scaffolding down and for the first time ever I imagined it not being there and got really excited. Then they stopped taking it down, and it's still there, but at least there is no longer a pole in our garden! Looking forward to that not dominating our view, one day, maybe...

- The mismatch walls and fences. The bare breeze-block walls are just so ugly and so very grey.

- The unpainted pebble-dash finish on the house. It's just so grey!

The things I like:

- The deck! It's so much nicer to walk, sit, play on wood rather than the concrete that was there before. It's so much softer to touch and to look at.

- The grass! It's pretty unusual in our area to have grass, as the gardens are so small that the grass doesn't get enough light to thrive.

And my plans to change:

- We're getting some raised beds put in the sides, and climbers planted to try to cover up some of the breeze-block and fencing.

- I want to have the trees at the end taken out as the grass towards the back of the garden is dying because they block too much light. And instead...

- A living willow or bamboo pole (with climbers, maybe beans?) teepee at the end of the garden to play in.

- To cover up some of the pebble-dash with boards for painting and boards with blackboard paint on.

When I pointed it out to Ivy she gasped. In Bristol I think seeing a hot air balloon is to summer what crocuses are to Spring. So if summer is coming then it MUST be spring !
She watched and pointed and waved. And she no longer says "boon", the L is making it's way in there, but she's a bit funny with L's and kind of overuses her tongue to say them so it sounds a bit like "bleh-oon".

She then asked "Where are you coming from, Mummy?" I wasn't sure what she meant so I tried a few answers "I came from over there" and pointed to where I'd been doing laundry. She asked again, so clearly that wasn't a satisfactory answer! Eventually I said Bristol and the way she said "Oh" told me that this answer was acceptable. She asked "Where is Daddy coming from?" and accepted London as an answer. I asked her where she came from and she said "I'm coming from your tummy, Mummy!". OH, so that's what she meant! So I corrected myself and said that Daddy came from Grandma's tummy, which she found interesting, and that I came from Granny's tummy, which she found disturbing. She said "No, you are not coming from Granny's tummy!".
1. Gardening, in the loosest sense of the word. She has a little trowel set and will spend ages just moving soil between pots/dumping it on the deck. And watering, she needs me to fill her watering can every now and then. So, the combination of these two things makes it look like a few bags of compost exploded all over our deck. But who cares?! She's happy, and I get to cook dinner in peace (I am finally realising that losing my cooking mojo is because I never get to do it undisturbed). (this picture from two weekends ago when we planted seeds)

2. Rice play. Some rice, a few containers, a spoon or measuring cup all on a tray, and she spends a long, long time transferring it from one to the other in all the different ways possible. She concentrates so hard and must be learning a lot and loves it. Plenty ends up on the floor too, but if it's not intentional it doesn't count as mess ;)

3. Playdoh and a play knife. Forget rolling pin and all those exciting shaped plastic cutters. Ivy just needs a blunt knife and she cannot be torn away from it (not even for cake, seriously). Also, a great moment earlier when she brought us a piece of playdoh and announced "A playdoh chickpea!" and yes, this piece of playdoh really did look like a chickpea! Do I have the most hippy toddler ever?! (This picture from today, after cutting and squashing the chickpea before we could get a decent photo)

A fabric box (which currently houses Ivy's kitcheny toys. The pretty fabric softens the uggliness of all that plastic) from this tutorial thanks to Pinterest! When I read through the tutorial I was nievly optimistic on how quick it would be, thinking I could do it during one nap time. Didn't help that my interfacing isn't fusible so after trying to fuse it and nothing happening I had to use bondaweb too, which added a whole extra step. Anyway, I love it!
A skirt for Steph for Christmas (whoops. BUT, how nice to receive gifts in the middle of grey and drizzly January, it's almost like I planned it!). From this tutorial, also thanks to Pinterest. I don't have any photos though as I was just glad to have finished the damn thing having started it in early December (this is often how I feel about sewing projects by the end!). I had to make a lot of adaptations to the original pattern as I didn't have enough of one fabric and didn't want the elastic exposed like in the pattern.

Three birthday cards. A crossword style, things-you-like card for my Mum. A painted dinosaur card that says "Happy birthday Sophisaurs" for Sophie. And a painted lobster card for Jake (the only one I took a photo of).
An appliqué bird t-shirt for my cousin's daughter, Nina, for Christmas. I finished her twin sister, Aya's, before Christmas but there wasn't a rush as they were all in Brazil. The wing of the bird and ear of the elephant are flap-able :)
Elephant wall hanging for my Dad's birthday. I did this in one long afternoon and evening the day before his birthday, even though I'd been planning it for months! Another one of those projects I underestimate how long it will take.
Hot air balloon appliqué top for Ivy. I'm really happy with the design, but the stitching is a bit dodgy as the top is stretchy and I must have been stretching it when I was sewing so it's turned out a bit wobbly, especially around the basket of the balloon. The balloon is also a bit too big for the t-shirt so when it's on it's not clear what it actually is.
Swinging with my Mum. So much love in the way Ivy looks at her Granny. Laurenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16197423786606530770noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5427097541449599487.post-22448238838815199652013-03-24T10:08:00.000+00:002013-03-24T10:08:55.325+00:00I have been hardly taking photos at all recently. February was an all time low, I only took 134! Probably no coincidence that February was the month my Grandma died. The few photos I have taken are mostly not pretty, mostly blurry, often on my phone, but mostly taken so I'll remember something. I'm going to start posting these along with the thing I wanted to remember. Probably in a random order.

--------------------------------

We got new toy shelves (YAY! ORGANISATION!) and Ivy found a bit of polystyrene from the packaging and found a few uses for it.

As food, for cooking. And cargo for the trains. Reminded me of her using pine needles at Christmas time for play food.

She also used it as tea in her tea pot, but then pretended to drink some and unintentionally inhaled some and so that was time for the polystyrene to go in the bin. Ivy smiled and said "Ooooh! Anna help a biscuits!". Throughout the day Ivy kept asking me "Anna Josh out?", and at one point when I was looking at my phone she asked "Texting baby Eve?".

.........................................

I was about to put my mug of tea down on the table when Ivy said urgently "Mummy! Mummy!" and handed me a coaster!

........................................

When asked "What makes you happy?" Ivy says "Mummy makes Ivy happy". And I didn't even teach her to say that!

...........................................

When I was getting Ivy to bed, and she was chattering sleepily, she said "Everyone haff a nose. Danny [Granny] haff a nose, like Ivy". Deep realisations about the world :P

............................................

When eating fish pie that I'd made. "Ivy like it a fish pie." And commenting on cows milk "Cow from a milk".

...........................................

While watching Olympic diving "Man uhoh... man uhoh... man uhoh. Man wet!"

.........................................

She is in love with her Kipper DVD that she got for her birthday, and is often quoting that, or telling me what Kipper said, or asking me to sing the song. She has said "Kipper better than Daddy and Mummy."
Ivy spent the morning at a panto with her grandparents, then spent time with my brother and his girlfriend. Ivy had been asking for three days "when Sarah coming?" and when laying the table she would tell me "Sarah fork, Sarah knife, UncLeo fork, UncLeo knife". I got down to some last minute birthday sewing (mostly not for Ivy though, as her friend shares her birthday). And then I felt a little lost without my cuddly girl, so embarked on some egg free baking for Ivy's birthday party.

When Ivy was brought home she opened the rest of the presents from her Granny and Grandad. Apparently for each of the two presents she'd already opened (a dress and a flask) she'd said "Ooooh label!".

I took photos at a slightly obsessive rate. We played in the garden ("this is the last time she will play in the garden as a one year old!"). She noticed the upside down dog bowl on the windowsill, and was very concerned that Charlie would have no water (the "why?" hand gesture). And looked up and the sky and "WOW!" the sky was grey so quick lets get inside before we are rained on.
This evening we wrapped it using pre-used wrapping paper, patchwork style. Proud.
This photo shows a rare moment of calm and loveliness in an outing which otherwise made me think "Why am I doing this? What made me think leaving the house with a toddler was a good idea?!". This calm was provided by polystyrene packing shapes and many baskets. Ivy was kept busy distributing them!

This morning Ivy asked to wear her Baby Doll (that's it's name, not quite at creative at Sleepsuit87) on her back, so I used a scarf for a wrap. I was squeeing on the inside the whole time, especially when she was turning around and talking to the doll "Baby Doll, road? Road?" which means, shall we go out.
The afternoon was lovely, with two friends coming round (more cake eating!) and the start of Ivy's birthday present opening.
Ivy went into meltdown mode as soon as we stepped foot inside the Old Vic and I wondered if this was going to be an awful experience to give us all fear of taking child to the theatre. But as soon as the show started she calmed down and remained calm (and slobbed out on my lap like I am her own personal human armchair) and was totally transfixed for the whole hour!

We also had amazing (and cheap!) lunch. That kind of amazing where you eat in silence apart from the occasional "this is so good".

At home we had new (Christmas present) tea, and cake, and watched a film. Then friends over in the evening for curry, and more cake! It was a perfect Boxing Day (apart from having to walk home in the rain without raincoats or umbrellas, Ivy was fine under her rain cover even if she did protest).
She commented that it was a bike, handled it a bit but didn't want to get on, and then wandered off with her breakfast! She was with us when we bought it, and tried one out in the shop - she wanted to get on it without prompting, and rode around the shop without help, then was sad to have to leave it there. So either she is punishing us for making her wait so long (two months!) or our mistake was in not wrapping it.

We went to Steph's for breakfast, it was so refreshing to walk there (though not a pretty walk at all) after two days of getting in and out of the car and hardly walking at all!

Ivy didn't quite get what her pots and pans were for at first, so we did some fake cooking in them. We were enthusiastically moving the invisible food around in the pan with the spatula and telling her what we were cooking, and she just looked at us with an expression that said "Poor you, your brain has broken". Once she found some actual objects to cook, then she got it. And was busy putting them in, lid on, lid off, object in another pan, lid on, etc.

After a nap at home, we went to my parents for the evening and to be fed. They gave Ivy and table and chairs, which they had the sense to hide under a blanket so that Ivy felt like she was actually opening something! And my brother gave her a plastercine set with little cookie cutters, so that was pretty much our evening sorted. When she'd push down hard on the cookie cutters, her little legs would lift up too!
